Learning to see things more than what they are, learning to see the beauty in your surroundings these are the vibes I get from this story.
The main character Delia walks you through her Carolina Shout of Charleston, South Carolina where she hears music everywhere. In most cases it comes from the people in "Way I see it Charleston must be the most musical place on earth. In most cases it comes from the people in her town "shouting" in marketplace, the harbor just about any where. The shouts the author, reads out to Carolina Shout have meaning to the people saying them and Delia breaks them down on every page telling the reader what they mean.
She walks the reader through her daily retinues and the "music" she hears and talks about the people making them. The text conveys the songs using both noises"shack-a-lack,shack-a-lack", for the prison chains as well as an overall different arrangement of text for the entire song almost like a poem.

I liked this book because it illustrated a young girl who was making the most of her surroundings and finding joy in the little sounds around her Also, I believe this book to be very educational because the author describes in his note, at the end of the book, how he wrote this book with the particular calls in mind that would be around the streets during the war time - calls of the vendors calling people's attention to what they had to sell.
I would definitely recommend it to children that are growing up and wanting to learn more of their history. I give it 3 stars. Mar 31, Rebekah added it. Delia loves going through the streets of Charleston, South Carolina and hearing all the shouts from the workers.
Segregation still played a major role in this time period. People were not always accepted to be in the same environment because of numerous reasons including race. This children's book shows critical issues that have happened in the past but I really like how this book puts it in a positive perspective.
This was a troubled time but teaching children how other children their age got through a troubled time is beneficial.
