It would be great, if the recorded concert material would also be made public in its original complete form. But perhaps it would be a little cynical to demand of a film which talks about improvisation being itself quite a bit improvisational to have a clear structure and logical commentary. Ehk on selles oma osa Maiken Madissoni viiulipartiidel, mis lisavad muidu kolmemehelisena tegutsenud kollektiivile uue tasandi.
Samas on siin toimeaineks muusikaline stiil, mille igast motiivist saaks omaette albumi, Maguspea Ja Mõrupea. A long time ago, in the yearsthere was something of an Estonian renaissance of stoner music.
The spiritual mood dissipates rather quickly, however, turning into a more rustic finno-evil rumble. Perhaps this is, in part, due to the inclusion of Maiken Madisson on violins that has added a new level to this former three-man-band.
That being said, the new album is somehow less uniform stylistically — the band plays with many different sounds, but none of the sounds are explored completely. But the active substance offered is a kind of musical style, where every motive could be an album of its own.
Then again, the Estonian nature is supposedly more concentrated and introverted anyway. Esmalt Uibopuu romaan on veider segu vanamoodsast ja modernsusest. Jaan Riiviku abielu Silviaga tuleb olude sunnist ja armastuseks liiga hilja. It has been a while, since I finished reading a book and, more than that, one which is a part of Estonian literature.
The presence of the town plays a big role throughout the book and that is perhaps in this that the novel is most successful — in believably portraying the organic evolution of the town during a time of cataclysmic historic changes. Riivik is opposed by his friend, antagonist and saviour, Agu Moon who decides — also coming from a poor family — to go along with the new regime. A police chief becomes a warehouse worker, a shoe-maker becomes an ideological interrogator and, at the end of Maguspea Ja Mõrupea all, this community so familiar to one another, will have changed into a town of strangers.
As a result of all this, Uibopuu occasionally seems much older than other authors of his time. That being said, the book does surprise with certain experimental elements at times. Although the novel has more of passive description than action, the focus of the book does managed to shift several times, being at times more on the general historic events, then on other times more on the day-to-day lives of people.
Only a hundred pages to its end — when the historic narrative almost seems to have Maguspea Ja Mõrupea its inevitable outcome, there are several unexpected turns in the action. It would be impossible to separate the historical context from the description of the world or character development.
The burden of historical narrative is particularly tiring in the long analyses of the daily political events that characters tend to convey. Still, Uibopuu does not dive too deep into re-writing history and shuns away Maguspea Ja Mõrupea a more detailed description on how the change of power took place.
For example, the process of Riivik becoming a journalist is described at much greater length than the last elections of the republic in that the author touches only in passing. In a way, this conveys a good sense of Maguspea Ja Mõrupea the people were left in the dark of what was going on in the country.
Despite the historic closeness of the described events, the novel does not have a strong political charge and rather focuses on human fate and changes in the society in a rather distanced manner, through the eyes of those defeated.
Bad things are generally done by the community members themselves. Riivik is betrayed by those closest. In that sense, Maguspea Ja Mõrupea setting differs from the countless Estonian novels on farm-life where masses of Estonian farmers — only recently turned masters in their own land — try to make a living from the harsh and rocky Estonian soil.
Despite the fact that the story is set in a small town on the borderlands, this is an entirely urban novel. The smallness of a small-town conveys certain emotions that have remained true for the modern 21 st century Estonia as well. Where is this, what I would still have felt two years ago? This too is possibly a German influence.
See erinevus on nii piisavalt fundamentaalne, et Last. Taustamuusikat pidude jaoks siit ei tulnud. Ilmselt on see albumi 9. Flowers from Exile sukeldub ajastusse hulga muukeelsete tsitaatide abil. Sirp Indrek Hargla. Baiita needus. Toimetanud Linda Uustalu. Kujundanud Toomas Niklus. Varrak,lk.
Viimase puhul muutub see problemaatiliseks loo terviklikkuse enda suhtes. Laiemalt jagunevad need kaheks.
